FORWARD DEPLOYED ENGINEERING

Engineers close to the problem

Some work needs an engineer who can investigate the requirement as well as implement it. Our forward deployed engineers collaborate with your users and technical team to understand the constraints, develop a solution, and support its use in your environment.

WHAT AN FDE DOES

Learn from the work as you build

Working directly with the people using a system helps an engineer uncover missing requirements and test proposed changes. The engagement combines discovery and implementation, with priorities reviewed alongside your team.

01Ongoing discovery

Understand the task in context

Work with users to identify the inputs, decisions, and exceptions that affect the proposed solution.

Observe → Clarify → Test

02Hands-on development

Build within agreed working practices

Implement changes using the repositories, environments, and review procedures established for the engagement.

Develop → Review → Release

03System integration

Resolve the dependencies around the feature

Investigate the interfaces, data access, and permissions needed for the solution to work in its intended environment.

Inspect → Connect → Validate

04Knowledge sharing

Keep your engineers involved

Use technical discussions, code reviews, and documentation to share the reasoning and implementation as work progresses.

Collaborate → Explain → Document

ENGAGEMENT SCOPE
  • Objective and review pointsDefine the initial problem, intended outputs, and checkpoints for reviewing the engagement.
  • Time commitmentAgree the capacity and collaboration hours required for the proposed work.
  • Role continuityClarify the assigned responsibilities and how changes in personnel would be managed.
WORKING ACCESS
  • Required onboardingIdentify applicable screening, training, and approvals with your team before access is granted.
  • Tools and environmentsConfirm the development, communication, and testing systems the engineer will use.
HANDOVER
  • Deliverables and rightsRecord what will be delivered and the applicable intellectual property and access terms in the agreement.
  • Transition requirementsDefine the documentation, open-work record, and knowledge transfer expected at the end.
HOW IT RUNS

From onboarding to working increments

The initial plan establishes access, a focused objective, and a way to review progress. Timing depends on the complexity of the work and the readiness of the environment.

  1. 01

    Align

Agree the problem to address, the responsible stakeholders, and the first reviewable output.

  2. 02

    Onboard

Complete access and orientation, then examine how the current workflow behaves in practice.

  3. 03

    Develop

Implement and test focused changes, using feedback from users and engineers to guide the next increment.

  4. 04

    Transfer

Review decisions, document operation, and share remaining work with the team that will continue it.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Understand the embedded role

What does a forward deployed engineer do?
The engineer works closely with a client’s users and technical team to investigate a requirement and implement a solution in that context. The role includes both technical delivery and clarification of the problem being solved.
How does this relate to a contract role?
The distinction is in the responsibilities, not simply the contract type. An FDE engagement explicitly includes discovery and collaboration with users as well as implementation; other contract roles may have a more defined task scope.
When would a project team be more appropriate?
A project engagement may fit when you want a team to manage a defined deliverable. An embedded role may fit when your own team will guide priorities and needs close technical collaboration throughout the work.
How is the duration decided?
Duration depends on the objective, onboarding needs, and expected work. We agree an initial term and review points rather than assume every assignment needs the same length.
Is permanent hiring an option?
If a permanent position becomes relevant, the parties can discuss it. Availability, eligibility, and any conversion terms need to be reviewed under the engagement agreement.
